Real Madrid Director-General Jorge Valdano: It Was Important For Us To Defeat ... - Goal.com India

Real Madrid director-general Jorge Valdano hailed his team after their 2-0 defeat of Valencia at the Bernabeu in the Spanish Primera Division on Saturday evening.

The win came just five days after los Blancos' 5-0 Clasico defeat to Milan at Camp Nou and Valdano believes that this victory shows the players' characters.

"Tonight's result was especially important," said Valdano on Saturday, according to Madrid's official website. "We received a harsh blow on Monday and failing to win tonight could have hurt our aspirations to win the title.

"Victory came late, but it came nonetheless and it could have been even greater. We wish to thank the crowd for the support it always gives us and the team for their efforts against a great side that complicated things for us."

Analysing Madrid's performance against los Che, Valdano explained, "We were somewhat rusty in the first half, but we improved after half-time. We had several chances on goal, but our game flowed better after our first strike.

"We could have even scored more goals. The coach has many options to cover for Higuain's absence. We had the attacking midefielder of the German national team on the pitch tonight, as well as Portugal's best player and one of Argentina's best forwards.

"The team had great potential in attack. Benzema came on in the second half and goals came soon after, so his work tonight was also very important."

Valdano is also confident that striker Gonzalo Higuain can recover from his injury before long and enthused, "We believe Higuain can recover with conservative recovery methods. We have to see the schedule through trying to avoid the player from having surgery.

"He started to have this problem not so long ago, so we shouldn't be hasty. If surgery is necessary, then we will look for the best specialist to treat him."
